In the wake of the shocking clashes between BJP and TMC supporters at a South Kolkata temple that left several injured, including a police officer, the BJP held the Mamata Banerjee-led government responsible for the violence.
Amid rising tensions and mounting anger, the BJP held a vigil at the assembly and demanded the resignation of the state's Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, who is also the president of the West Bengal Board of Little Temple Trusts that oversees the management of all temples in the state.
So far, 40 people have been arrested in connection with the violence across seven FIRs.
The BJP has alleged that the minister had a hand in the violence and that the police had been informed in advance of the BJP's plan to unveil the portrait.
"It is a clear indication of the utter failure of the state government to maintain law and order," BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said.
The BJP has demanded the resignation of the minister and called for strict action against those involved in the clashes.
"The rule of democracy is being destroyed by the Mamata Banerjee regime," alleged BJP leader Ritesh Tiwari.
The situation is still tense in Kolkata, with the police on high alert and additional forces deployed in sensitive areas.
The clash has drawn criticism from all corners, with many calling for peace and calm.
Only time will tell what implications the Maheshtala clashes will have on the political landscape of West Bengal.
