The President of the Austrian Automobile Association (OeAMSV), Franz Wlassak, has lambasted Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the FIA President, alleging foul play in the election that saw Ben Sulayem victorious. In a letter to FIA members, seen by Motorsport.com, Wlassak urged members to reject changes to the FIA's statutes that could pave the way for Ben Sulayem to potentially seek a second term as President.
The letter claimed that there was "potential harm to the FIA's reputation and governance" and that the changes would put the FIA "in conflict with its own Code of Ethics." These allegations have stemmed from the way in which Ben Sulayem originally assumed the Presidency, with many alleging that a statute change was made to allow him to run as an independent candidate, rather than being tied to the nomination of the UAE, as is customary.
Wlassak alleges that the statutes submitted for approval are "an attempt to consolidate power," and that "FIA Members cannot and should not let this happen." These are bold statements from the President of the Austrian Automobile Association, and it will be interesting to see how this develops in the coming months.
The statute changes could be approved as soon as the upcoming FIA General Assembly in St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 7.
