Bonn Climate Change Conference

The Bonn Climate Change Conference holds significant importance as an annual gathering under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This mid-year event provides a key platform for climate negotiations and technical discussions, helping to shape the agenda for the larger Conference of the Parties, which takes place every November. The 2025 edition of the Bonn conference began on June 16 and will run until June 26, bringing together more than 5,000 participants, including government officials, Indigenous representatives, international organisations, scientists, and members of civil society.

A major focus of this year’s discussions revolves around financing climate action and advancing the Global Goal on Adaptation. The conference, formally known as the Sessions of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies, is crucial for ironing out the scientific and technical details that form the backbone of broader climate agreements. The work done in Bonn directly influences the negotiations and final outcomes seen during the annual COP meetings.

The key bodies leading the Bonn sessions are the Subsidiary Body for Implementation and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice. The Subsidiary Body for Implementation is responsible for reviewing how decisions are put into practice and ensures that financial and technical support reaches developing nations. Meanwhile, the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice bridges the gap between the latest scientific research and policy decisions, providing the necessary evidence to guide effective climate strategies.

One of the headline issues this year is the Global Goal on Adaptation. Originally introduced in the 2015 Paris Agreement, the goal seeks to define a clear and shared global objective for adapting to climate impacts, similar to the way the Paris Agreement set targets for reducing emissions. Significant movement on this front only began during COP28 in Dubai, where negotiators agreed on a framework to better define and measure global adaptation efforts. The Bonn conference is now expected to refine these ideas further, paving the way for concrete commitments at the next COP.
