ITR Deadline Extended To Sept 15: What You Need To Know

arsebnTotal Tax Care, a Bangalore-based tax and investment planning firm, has advised taxpayers to make it a priority to get their returns filed as soon as possible, even though the deadline has been extended to September 15th. The principal consultant of the firm, Mr. Balakrishnan further added that though the government has extended the deadline, there is no exemption from interest under Sections 234B and 234C.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has granted taxpayers across India a relief by extending the deadline for income tax returns (ITR) for Assessment Year 2021-22 to September 15. However, this extension is not applicable to taxpayers in Assam and those recently affected by floods in Maharashtra, who will have until October 31, 2021, to file their ITR.

Many taxpayers across the country were requesting an extension, offering more time to file returns for the fiscal year gone by. Taxpayers now have more time to evaluate their earnings and compute the taxes they owe to the government without being subject to penalties, interest, and late fees for late filing.

The extension applies to filing ITR forms for both residents and non-residents. However, the government has clarified that the extension applies to the return filing process and not the payment of taxes. Taxpayers who are due a refund will not attract interest on the refund amount if they file their ITR after July 31, 2021, and before September 15, 2021.

For those who will file their taxes after the extended deadline, a maximum penalty of Rs. 5000/- may be applicable. However, there is no need to panic as of now. You have until September 15 to file your returns without paying any interest on the late filing.
