Black Box Of Flight IX812 Undertight Security, Not Sent Abroad: Aviation Minister

The investigation into the crash of Air India's Flight IX812 in June is continuing with the "black box" of the plane still in the country and under the scrutiny of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said in the Parliament that the AAIB had not sent the black box abroad, as all the experts needed for the investigation are in India.

The black box, actually two boxes with all cockpit conversations and flight data recorder are being scrutinized. The boxes are regularly sent abroad for analysis, but Patel assured MPs that the "black box is in this country and is being scrutinized by the AAIB."

The Flight IX812, from Mumbai to London crashed into a hostel complex in Ahmedabad moments after it took off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12 afternoon. There were 130 passengers and crew members on board and more than 50 others on the ground killed in the crash.

Patel told the MPs that a total of 19 minutes of conversation in the cockpit before the crash has been recovered. He said, "The conversation was between the pilot and the co-pilot and a traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS) alarm activated six seconds before the crash."

He said the investigation is ongoing and a report is expected in a "reasonable time."
