Indian Chairman of Tejas Jets project blames the American firm behind the aircraft's engine for delays, citing their inability to supply F404 engines on time. This has caused a delay in the delivery of the ordered aircraft by at least six months
The Indian chairman of the Tejas Jets project, Sunil, has publically disclosed that the project is facing a delay of at least six months due to the American firm behind the aircraft's engine, GE Aviation, failing to supply F404 engines on time. This delay has prompted the Indian Ministry of Defence to express concern about the project's future.
The state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) had previously agreed to deliver the first 18 Tejas Mark 1A fighter jets to the Indian Air Force (IAF) by December 2022 after completing the manufacturing in July 2022. However, the company has now admitted to facing challenges due to delays in receiving engines from its original equipment manufacturer (OEM), GE Aviation.
Sunil, the Chairman and MD of HAL, expressed his disappointment and assured that the delay was not due to any licencing or technological issue on their end. He emphasized that HAL is committed to delivering the jets as soon as the pending engines are supplied.
This announcement has raised concerns about the future of the Tejas Jets project, which is crucial for the Indian Ministry of Defence due to its ongoing border issues with China and Pakistan. The IAF, which needs the aircraft as soon as possible, has been forced to postpone its plans and adjust its modernization strategy accordingly.
