China's New 'Mosquito' Drone Can Fly Under Radar And Spy

If you can't beat 'em, spy on 'em. China is developing an extremely stealthy drone that mimics a mosquito's flight characteristics.

Apparently, it's rude to say someone has big wings (can't really think of a more polite way to put it, honestly). But! That's essentially what Chinese drone manufacturers are trying to do to American radar with their new bionic mosquito drone. It's a very stealthy, very annoying piece of cutting-edge technology that has wings and legs that are extremely thin, making it hard to see with the naked eye. Also, it doesn't make any noise like a regular drone. That's because, according to the company's CEO, Zhou Yiwei, who spoke to South China Morning Post, the wings are "completely different from conventional drones as they have a thin layer of Bionic membrane wings and can control the frequency of their wings' vibration to make them more silent."

It weighs less than two grams, measures less than two centimeters in length, which is roughly the size of a real mosquito. An actual, live mosquito that you could theoretically (and disgustingly) swallow whole. The tech behind the tiny drone is remarkable, and envisioning a fleet of these buzzing around somewhere, spying on someone, is both impressive and deeply unsettling.

While we can only speculate as to the use of these mosquito drones, their ability to evade radar is a deeply concerning development in military technology. Will this be the start of a new arms race to create the most stealthy, nearly invisible drone? Only time and a lot more mosquito bites will tell.
