Ever wondered what led to the 'human shield' analogy? This is the gut-wrenching story of Chittibabu, a prisoner in the Madras Central Prison during Emergency, who died shielding a young M.K. Stalin, then a political prisoner, inside a prison cell.
Chittibabu, an activist himself, had knowingly placed himself in front of Stalin to bear the brunt of a brutal lathi assault by the prison authorities, saving the young inmate, who would go on to become one of the most influential politicians in modern India.
Stalin, who is the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, was imprisoned during the Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was accused of circulating anti-government leaflets and was sentenced to life imprisonment.
According to reports, Stalin was severely beaten by prison guards who blamed him for a conspiracy to kill Gandhi. When Chittibabu learned of the beating, he volunteered to take Stalin's punishment.
On the fateful day, while Stalin was sequestered in a different part of the prison, Chittibabu courageously stood up to the guards and demanded they be lenient with Stalin. It was then that the guards took out their wrath on Chittibabu, beating him brutally with lathis.
He succumbed to his injuries and passed away a few months later, with many believing that Stalin was spared a worse fate thanks to Chittibabu's selflessness.
His act of bravery and self-sacrifice in defending a fellow prisoner earned him accolades and has since been immortalized in Tamil folklore.
In memory of Chittibabu's bravery, let us always remember that freedom often comes at a cost, and that sometimes, the greatest acts of heroism are those performed by ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.
