Telangana’s Vision for Global AI Leadership: New Policy Initiatives and Strategic Partnerships

Telangana IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu announced plans to introduce a policy on AI infrastructure after the Global AI Summit (GAIS), which is scheduled for September 5-6. Speaking at the GAIS curtain-raiser organized by the Hyderabad Software Enterprises Association (HYSEA), he shared the state’s vision of positioning Hyderabad as a global AI capital. Multiple companies have already shown interest in collaborating with the government.

The summit’s purpose is broader than just bolstering the IT sector; it aims to integrate AI across various industries, including hospitality, defense, agriculture, and governance, to improve productivity and quality of life. The minister highlighted upcoming deals in the defense and hospitality sectors, focusing on expanding Global Capacity Centres (GCC) both in India and internationally.

The initial AI investments, estimated at Rs 4 billion, have exceeded expectations. The government prioritizes research and development (R&D) in AI, aiming to create self-sufficient ecosystems that foster product development and export.

The government also plans to integrate AI into the MSME sector to enhance their efficiency and promote the use of emerging technologies. AI's potential in fields such as manufacturing, judiciary, and narcotics control was also highlighted, including discussions on using AI to streamline legal processes.

The summit also emphasizes creating a workforce equipped with AI skills, with the goal of training over 10,000 students in AI through collaborations with organizations like TASK, T-Hub, and TSIC. The government is also considering introducing AI education in schools from grades 7 and 8.

Addressing concerns about AI replacing jobs, Sridhar Babu stressed the importance of upskilling the workforce, including plans for a Skill University to address the evolving job market.
