PM Modi Posts On X As Today Marks 50 Years Of Indira's Emergency; Calls Congress 'Deranged'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today highlighted the dark episode of Indira Gandhi's Emergency to warn voters about the dangers of a "dominant" family's obsession with power. The BJP leader posted a series of tweets to mark the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency, in which he said the Congress placed democracy under arrest and abused the judicial system to achieve "power greed".

"The Congress' deranged mindset is an obstacle to India's progress. They have abused the judicial system for their own selfish interests and for achieving power greed," PM Modi's first tweet read.

PM Modi also shared a video highlighting events that took place during the Emergency and the process of its imposition.

"India witnessed a dark day on this day in 1975, when Congress betrayed the trust people had in it and imposed an Emergency. Democracy was subverted and the entire nation was put under arrest. Every institution was abused and misused," the prime minister said in the video.

He added that the Emergency was a "black spot on our democracy" and that " lakhs of people were jailed without the slightest proof, their fundamental rights were violated, and they were not given a fair chance to defend themselves".

The imposition of the Emergency in June 1975 was supported by about a dozen political parties, including the Jan Sangh, socialists, and communists.

PM Modi said the Emergency marked the darkest period in the country's modern history, when basic freedoms were snatched.

He said that BJP stands for "democracy, prosperity, and security" and that "Congress is synonymous with corruption, inefficiency, and insecurity".

He urged people to "never forget the dark history of the Emergency and the atrocities committed by the Congress".

He posted his tweets in Hindi and English, with the same message, at 8 am.

Congress leaders responded to PM Modi's tweets, with former party president Rahul Gandhi saying that the BJP leader had done "great injustice" to his position and "sold the Indian people's dreams for the throne".

"The BJP is scared of the Congress. That is why they are trying to distract the public from important issues and create a false narrative through PM Modi's misleading statements," he tweeted.

Congress leader P Chidambaram called the Emergency "a blot on democracy" and said that the BJP was trying to "rewrite history" to "hide their failures".

He said that the imposition of the Emergency was a "wrong decision" but that it was "rectified within three years".

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that the BJP was trying to "airbrush history" and that PM Modi was "uncomfortable with the truth".

"The BJP constantly distorts the truth and tries to rewrite history to hide their failures. The truth is that the Emergency was a mistake and it was revoked as soon as the people's mandate was received," Tharoor tweeted.

PM Modi's tweets came a day after the Congress Working Committee urged people to boycott the BJP's "vilification campaign" on the Emergency and said the party does not deserve to rule if it cannot respect the democratic spirit.
