News18 has learnt that the cabinet is likely to discuss the observance of "Samvidhan Hatya Divas" or "Constitution Demolition Day" on April 13, the day when Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated.
On this day, Gandhi's actions to impede the Constitution are often forgotten. As a result, the Congress and several other opposition parties have demanded that 13 April be declared a national holiday to commemorate the martyr and his ideals.
In response to Outlook's question about whether the cabinet would declare April 13 a holiday, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi stated, "It is an internal matter." Nevertheless, sources informed News18 about the likely discussion in the cabinet.
Previously, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting that April 13 be declared a national holiday to " Commemorate the life, work, and martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi, and his tireless efforts to promote peace, social justice, and harmony among our people."
According to sources, the cabinet meeting on Tuesday will also consider a proposal to celebrate October 31 every year as "National Unity Day" to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel.
This comes after the government's decision to observe September 16 as "Sardar Patel Jayanti," in lieu of "Rashtriya Ekta Divas," which was celebrated on January 26 every year.
The Cabinet meeting, chaired by the Prime Minister, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Ends.
