The inaugural Shooting League of India (SLI) has attracted athletes from around the world, with more than 400 shooters participating upon its inception.
Only a month has passed since the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) unveiled the SLI, and there has already been a substantial amount of interest and participation from international shooters. The league, which is set to begin this month, will comprise three tiers of competition: the Elite Tier, the Premier Tier, and the Challenge Tier.
This weekend, the Elite Tier will take place at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi. Moreover, the Premier Tier will be hosted in Kolkata at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Indoor Stadium. It is worth noting that this is the first time that such a shooting range will be established in the city.
Speaking of the venue, Kolkata will also host the Challenge Tier in June. This will provide a platform for young shooters to demonstrate their abilities and develop their skills. Notably, international shooters will be present at each tier of the league.
The main goal? To promote shooting as a sport in India and to uncover fresh young talent. As the NRAI has stated, the SLI will be a yearly event that will be included in the International Shooting Sport Federation's (ISSF) international calendar.
All shooters will be monitored and evaluated by an independent oversight committee, according to the NRAI. This committee will be headed by Lt. Gen. (Retd) Mukesh Sabharwal, PVSM, VSM, as the chairman, and joint secretary Gunjan Singh, as the member-secretary.
In an interview, Sabharwal expressed that the committee will ensure that the selection process is entirely fair and free of any discrepancies. He noted that an international consultancy firm will also be involved to provide technical support for the league.
The CEO of the NRAI, Shaleen Sinha, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of the league and the overwhelming support it has received thus far. He emphasized that the league will contribute significantly to the growth of the sport in India and will be a landmark moment for the country on the global sporting stage.
It remains to be seen what impact the Shooting League of India will have on the international sporting circuit. Nevertheless, one thing is certain: the league has caught the attention of athletes and sports enthusiasts alike.
