RSS did not oppose Emergency all the time, says LDF convener

Emergency is considered one of India's darkest periods. Many believe that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was suspended and opposed during The Emergency but the recent statement of its LDF convener Sureshkumar Poddar might surprise you.

According to Poddar, the RSS workers were continuously active during the Emergency period and did not oppose it all the time. In an interview given to news agency PTI, Poddar claimed that the RSS workers were engaged in social work during the emergency and continued to work in the interest of the nation. However, opposition politicians and activists criticized the move and accused the RSS of working in coordination with the Congress party.

Poddar further added to his statement that the RSS workers were directed to focus on their assigned work and not on politics, during the emergency period.

The Congress party, which is currently out of power, had enforced the emergency in 1975 when it was in power. The move was highly criticized and is considered one of the most oppressive times in Indian democracy.
