'Total Communism' Trump Lashes Out At AOC, Schumer After Primary Loss

Breaking with decades of political tradition, New York Republican Chairman Nick Langworthy went so far as to label Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a "total communist" yesterday as the party sought to come to terms with the crushing primary defeat inflicted by the Democratic socialist.

Zohran Mamdani, who beat a Republican-backed candidate in the 14th Congressional District, was branded a "100% communist lunatic" by Trump, who warned that the Democratic Party "will be completely dominated by radicals in the not-too-distant future".

The president's inflammatory statement came as both Republicans and Democrats sought to regroup after a night of primary elections that saw several high-profile casualties and a number of unexpected results.

Trump's opposition to the progressive agenda of Ocasio-Cortez and the so-called "Squad" of four liberal Congresswomen including Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Cori Bush has been consistent since the president accused them of "hate" speech in 2019.

While the president's comments on social media are often erratic and contradictory, his messaging on this issue has been consistent, despite claims that he was taking ownership of the socialist label, a move that many critics said was more likely to be an attempt to sow fear and doubt within his own party ahead of the midterm elections.

"She's a loser, and if she did win, which she won't, we'll win her election," Trump said at the time. "We won't lose. We can't let that happen. We can't let communism win, folks."

But yesterday, Trump took to Twitter to double down on his opposition to the progressives, invoking the name of late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and claiming that "Castro was good to me, but socialism and communism are failures, pure and simple".

And yet, as the New York Republican Party sought to come to terms with defeating or losing key candidates in the state, where Republicans have traditionally made gains against Democrats in midterm elections, the party's chairman, Nick Langworthy, showed his frustration with the president's messaging.

"I think he means well, but it's the wrong message," Langworthy told the New York Times, adding that the party would not be "taking lessons on communism from a five-time bankrupt" a reference to Trump's corporate failures.

The dramatic primary night results saw a number of high-profile casualties across the country. In a surprise result, Representative Sean Patrick Maloney, a Democrat, lost his bid for attorney general to Republican challenger Michael Henry.

And in a major upset, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who had been considered a long shot, beat the heavily favored GOP candidate and former New York City Council member Dan Halloran in the 14th Congressional District.

Mamdani's win stunned political observers, given the district, historically a Republican stronghold, backed Trump by double digits in the last presidential election. But despite the president's opposition, Mamdani celebrated his victory yesterday, declaring that "the district and the country are ready for progressive change".

And while Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez herself has not commented publicly on Mamdani's win, a spokesperson for the Congresswoman told Politico that "Zohran and Jessica Wisneski-Samson are running inspiring campaigns that champion the progressive movement".

The spokesperson added that "NY-14 and NY-17 are both at the heart of a new, vibrant progressive ecosystem that is now a force in American politics".
