Indian cricketing great R. Ashwin has challenged Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna to 'dry up the runs' and claimed that India ends up bowling Jasprit Bumrah more than necessary. Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna were thrashed by the South African batters and fielded poorly during the centurion partnership between Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock, causing the defeat to the Proteas in the 2nd Test match.
"If I were a bowler, I would want to bowl less and take more wickets. I would want to keep my economy rate tight. This is what bowling in tournaments is about when you can't control the runs and the balls are coming out with ease," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
"So, for Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj, it won't be easy for them for the rest of the games unless they learn from somebody like Morne Morkel, who has bowled in this attack and has the ability to dry up the runs. That's exactly what you need on these kind of pitches," he added.
Ashwin, who has bagged 362 wickets from 71 Tests, stressed that Indian bowlers didn't attempt to put pressure on the batsmen during the crucial moments of the match and failed to create enough breakthroughs.
"They didn't create enough breakthroughs and didn't put enough pressure on South Africa. You have to give credit to Bavuma and de Kock for hanging in there and scoring those crucial runs. You need to put in those match-winning performances," he said.
"When you look at the number of balls bowled by Jasprit Bumrah... he is your best bowler and he is going to be needed more and more because (the other bowlers) aren't bowling enough overs to put pressure on the batter. They tried to bowl short and the batters tried to put them away. On such pitches, you need to pitch the ball up," he signed off.
