Rahul Gandhi, the former president of India's main opposition party, has criticised the country's ruling party, BJP, for making it harder for the poor to own homes.
Speaking at an event in Jaipur, Rajasthan, Gandhi highlighted how rising costs and lack of infrastructure have made it impossible for the poor to realise their dreams.
He said that homes are no longer affordable for the poor, who now face even greater challenges during the pandemic.
Gandhi, who is also the MP from Amethi, claimed that after coming to power, the BJP had ignored the poor and focused instead on helping wealthy businessmen.
He criticised the government's Covid-19 pandemic response, claiming that the relief packages were tailored to benefit the wealthy and that the lockdown only served to make the wealthy richer.
The Congress party has long criticised the BJP government for not doing enough to help the poor, and Gandhi's comments come ahead of crucial state elections that will test the ruling party's popularity.
The BJP has rejected the claims and says it continues to target housing for all by 2022.
