Ashok Gehlot, Chief Minister of the Indian state of Rajasthan, has reportedly alleged that there is an "undeclared emergency" in the country. According to the Indian news outlet Times of India, Gehlot made these allegations during a recent press conference, stating that the democracy in the country was under threat and that the federal administration should take note.
Gehlot, a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) party, reportedly highlighted the situation in Rajasthan, where the opposition had allegedly been orchestrating rallies and protests against the state government and even falsely accusing the administration of installing CCTV cameras at temples to spy on priests.
He claimed that similar incidents were also occurring in other states, implying a coordinated effort to destabilize elected governments, and urged the Supreme Court to take note and intervene to protect the democracy.
The chief minister also warned of a "dangerous trend of politicizing the institutions."
This comes as a reaction to the ongoing investigation of a teacher handling a class of students that amounted to nearly 600 attending a sexual education class with the teacher briefly showing a cartoon of the sex act before turning off the screen.
This incident has been termed a 'dog whistle' by INC and a 'serious matter' by the ruling party BJP with the teacher being suspended and likely facing legal proceedings.
The INC has used this incident to rally opposition to the BJP and rake in public support.
We will have to wait and see if this tactic will be successful during the upcoming elections.
Only time will tell.
