Sainz Sr will not challenge for the FIA Presidency

Carlos Sainz Sr., the reigning World Rally Champion, will not run against FIA President Jean Todt for the position of head of motorsport's governing body. Sainz had publicly considered challenging Todt, saying last month he was considering "an offer from some teams and companies to be a candidate for the presidency of the FIA."

In response to these considerations, the F1 team boss of Aston Martin, Lawrence Stroll, reportedly said at the Brazilian Grand Prix that Sainz Sr. "has a lot to learn about the FIA and the politics that are involved."

It was also reported that Sainz Sr.'s son, Carlos Sainz Jr., who drives for McLaren in F1, had been pressured by Stroll to urge his father to step away from the presidency race.

The elder Sainz declined to comment on Stroll's remarks but, in an interview withRACER, he said his main reason for deciding not to run was that he didn't want to create a rift with Todt and the FIA.

"I have no problem with Jean Todt," he said. "I respect him a lot, I think he has done a good job during these years."

"Considering the great relationship that we have always had," Sainz Sr. said, "I didn't feel it was right to challenge him."

So, with Sainz Sr. out of the running, Todt will presumably remain as the FIA president, at least for the time being.
