A millennial-led energy company, Constellation, is rebooting the shuttered Three Mile Island nuclear plant and plans to have it running by 2027, demonstrating the renewed appeal of atomic power as a clean energy solution.
The company, which struck a deal last September to power Microsoft data centers, made the decision to reboot the plant as a response to the Pennsylvania state government's clean energy initiatives and goals. It's a remarkable turn of events for a plant that in 1979 suffered a catastrophic nuclear meltdown that raised global concerns about the safety of nuclear power.
The renewed interest in nuclear power is timely, given the recent focus on ways to combat climate change. While wind and solar energy are important parts of the equation, they are not enough to meet sustainability goals without a complementary technology that provides continuous, reliable power.
"It started to become clear to us that nuclear needed to be part of the solution," said Robert Frenck, vice president of communications and public affairs at Constellation.
It remains to be seen whether this reboot will inspire other nuclear plant revivals, as nuclear energy continues to be a contentious topic. Safety concerns and the perceived risk of nuclear accidents still linger in the public consciousness. However, with climate change as an ever-present global threat, the resurgence of nuclear power as a carbon-free energy source is worth noting.
