Says court overlooked key concerns on transparency and legitimacy of post-deadline votes
The Bombay High Court's dismissal of a petition challenging the validity of votes cast after the deadline in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections was criticised by Prakash Ambedkar, the leader of the Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh party and grandson of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Indian Constitution.
In a statement, Ambedkar claimed that the court had overlooked three critical concerns regarding the transparency and legitimacy of votes cast after the deadline. He argued that there needed to be a way to identify and eliminate any votes obtained through inducement, intimidation, or corruption.
He also stated that there was a need to establish a definite time frame for the election process to be completed, which would include the extension of deadlines. Finally, he called for greater transparency in the election process, including how elections are conducted and how the votes are counted.
According to Ambedkar, these concerns are critical to ensuring free and fair elections and protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
The court's dismissal of the petition underscores the challenges faced in ensuring that every vote is cast and counted fairly, he added.
