Commuters left wanting at the Integrated Bus Terminus in Tiruchi

Even though the Integrated Bus Terminus in Tiruchi was inaugurated six weeks ago by the CM, it is still not fully operational and commuters are facing several basic amenities shortages.

Even though the new Integrated Bus Terminus (IBT) in Tiruchi was inaugurated with much fanfare by the Chief Minister six weeks ago, it is still not fully operational, leaving commuters wanting.

Officials say efforts are on to get traders to open shops to ensure the availability of snacks and beverages for commuters. Maintenance of the terminus is being outsourced, and tenders for this are likely to be opened on June 30 to finalise contractors.

The IBT has been serving passengers since it was opened, but only a few shops are open, providing limited services. Officials say efforts are on to get more traders to open their shops, which are ready- but some owners are unwilling to take possession.

The new terminus is a much-needed upgrade to cater to the city's growing public transport needs and it is disappointing that it is not being optimised to benefit commuters. The terminus has been built on a 10-acre site adjacent to the existing bus stand, and it has 46 bays and three bus wheel changing bays.

It was one of the initiatives of the government to integrate all bus operations at one location and provide safe and secure boarding and disembarking of passengers.

The new terminus will help decongest traffic in the city centre and provide a safe and secure transit point with all basic amenities for passengers. But, currently, the infrastructure is not meeting the needs of commuters.

According to an official, "The maintenance of the terminus is being outsourced, and tenders are likely to be opened on June 30 to finalise contractors. Efforts are on to get more shops operational."

Committed to providing the best transport infrastructure, the government is continuously working to better public transport for all citizens.

Despite the promises and initiatives, the IBT is still not fully operational, leaving many to question the effectiveness of these initiatives.
