The recent bust by the Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch points to alleged corruption in health infrastructure projects, with Vijender Gupta and the Aam Aadmi Party exchanging bitter words.
The Delhi Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) recently raided the residence and offices of Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain and Deputy Chief Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj, as well as those of some contractors and officials, over allegations of corruption in the health sector. The case and subsequent arrests have turned into a political slugfest between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The ACB acted on a complaint from Delhi BJP's Vijender Gupta, alleging serious irregularities and suspected corruption in various health infrastructure projects, including the installation of modular operation theatres at Dwarka's Super Speciality Hospital and the procurement of medical equipment for several hospitals.
Jain and Bhardwaj have been arrested and detained for further questioning, while five others have been booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The arrests are significant given that Jain is a senior minister in the AAP government and Bhardwaj is the deputy chief minister. The AAP, unsurprisingly, has rubbished the arrests, calling them "political vendetta" and pointing to the irregularities in the BJP-ruled Civic Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
While the ACB investigation is yet to reveal its findings, the health infrastructure scandal, if proven, would be a significant setback for the Delhi government and the AAP, which has championed its work on improving the city's health infrastructure. Given the rising number of cases related to corruption and fraudulent practices in government projects, this one might just be the tip of the iceberg.
