Brain-Dead Pregnant Woman Removed From Life Support, Baby survives

A baby born at just under 1kg survived after his mother was removed from life support in a case that has drawn attention to Georgia's anti-abortion laws.

The family of a brain-dead pregnant woman says she would have wanted to continue the pregnancy, but doctors at a Georgia hospital decided to terminate her care and move forward with delivery, saying the baby had only a slim chance of survival.

The woman, a 30-year-old nurse identified as Adriana Smith, was admitted to the Atlanta area hospital after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a car accident. She was placed on life support, and doctors delivered the baby a month later, weighing just under 1 kilogram.

The hospital said in a statement that its clinical team, along with the patient's family, made the difficult decision to transition from supportive care to end-of-life care.

"We are aware of the emotional complexity of this situation, and our clinicians and care team have been instrumental in processing the emotions of the family while providing care," the statement reads.

The case has drawn attention to Georgia's anti-abortion laws and highlighted the dilemma hospitals can face when treating brain-dead pregnant women. Experts say there are no national guidelines on how to handle such cases.
