Santner to captain New Zealand in Zimbabwe

New Zealand will be led by Mitchell Santner in their upcoming T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe, with Tom Latham named as his deputy.

The surprise decision was announced by New Zealand Cricket on July 6, 2022, with the CEO of NZC, David White, stating: "The decision to replace Williamson with Santner for this series is a strategic one, designed to give us the best possible tactical options and flexibility for the series." White acknowledged that Santner's appointment was a one-off appointment, and that Williamson remained "a big part of our white-ball strategy."

The series, which commences on July 14 at Harare Sports Club, will see New Zealand compete with Australia and Zimbabwe for triangular series title. Despite top-order batter Devon Conway being unavailable due to a fractured thumb, NZC is confident that Santner's leadership will bring a new dynamism to the team. With Latham as his deputy, Santner's leadership will hopefully bring the best tactical options to the field.

White commented on the challenges of the coming series, stating: "These tournaments are closely fought and highly competitive, and we are expecting no less in Zimbabwe."

With Williamson absent and Conway's injury, this series will be a chance for other players to step up as New Zealand vie for victory in the tri-series.
