Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-captain Pathum Nissanka scored an unbeaten 103 to help his team secure a strong first-innings lead against Bangladesh on Tuesday.
With a deficit of 109 runs, Bangladesh was bowled out for 246 runs, with Sri Lanka ending the first session of the second test match at Galle International Stadium with a score of 3 for 167.
Despite trailing by 52 runs in the first innings, Bangladesh created a few openings against the Sri Lanka batters. But the home team's batting proved too strong, with Nissanka registering his third test century to lead Sri Lanka's resurgence.
"I have a feeling he (Nissanka) was waiting for this opportunity for a long time," said Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain. "He wanted to prove himself... He was waiting to get a chance to bat higher, and it is not easy to do what he did. So full credit to him."
Nissanka's impressive performance, alongside debutant Charith Asalanka and opener Oshada Fernando, helped Sri Lanka regain control of the match.
"I think everybody was wondering how Charith and Pathum played with great temperament and great confidence," said Mickey Arthur, the Sri Lanka coach. "At no stage did they look like they were under any pressure."
With Sri Lanka in a commanding position, Bangladesh will need a remarkable comeback to avoid a second consecutive loss against the hosts, after their disappointing performance in the first test match.
The test series acts as crucial preparation for both teams ahead of the World Cup, starting later this month in Oman and the United Arab Emirates.
All eyes are on Nissanka, who is poised to guide Sri Lanka to an imposing total in the first innings.
