India is running out of trees. And the Indian government has come up with a unique way to entice cash-starved farmers to grow more of them.
Under the Krishi Vaniki Yojana, farmers can buy saplings for just Rs 10 each and receive a benefit of Rs 70 per plant after three years, meeting certain conditions are met. The scheme aims to incentivize tree growing for the benefit of rural populations and the environment. Trees grown under the scheme must be planted at least one meter apart, making for a potential lucrative income for farmers with sufficient land.
Last year, Rahul Pandey, a reporter at the Times of India, tweeted that just one district in Madhya Pradesh has sold over 5.6 million trees under the scheme. This offers some insight into the program's scale and uptake.
This unique scheme highlights a developing trend; governments are realizing that to incentivize the public to do something positive for the environment, you need to make it worth their while financially. It's a win-win.
