'Murder' Blame Game Erupts Over Cancelled Mansa Devi Ropeway Tender In Haridwar

A bitter battle has erupted in Haridwar over the cancelled Mansa Devi ropeway tender, with the temple trust and civic leaders blaming each other for the fiasco and a whopping Rs 126 crore loss to the exchequer.

The Uttarakhand High Court recently flagged safety lapses in the ropeway, which was being built by a Netherlands-based company, and ordered its cancellation. The court appointed an advocate as a local commissioner to look into the matter.

The spat started when the Haridwar Municipal Corporation (HMC) blamed the Chota Char Dham Devasthanam Board, which manages the Mansa Devi temple, for failing to appoint a local commissioner to inspect the ropeway, which is being built by a Netherlands-based company.

The HMC claims that the board is responsible for the Rs 126 crore loss caused by the cancellation of the ropeway tender. The Devasthanam Board has hit back at the HMC, saying it was not responsible for the appointment of the local commissioner and that it had only sought regular updates from the company hired to build the ropeway.

The board has also accused the HMC of failing to ensure proper safety measures, despite having full responsibility for overseeing the project.

The HMC has claimed that the board's move to cancel the tender is a case of 'collusion and corruption', and that it (the board) had tried to 'loot the exchequer'.

The blame game continues, with both sides claiming to be innocent victims of the other's negligence.

Only time will tell what the outcome will be and who will ultimately be held responsible for the massive financial loss.

The local commissioner appointed by the court is expected to submit a report on the safety measures soon.
