Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on June 29 alleged that the AIADMK "fears" the BJP and remained silent at the June 22 Lord Murugan conference when a video clip was played criticising Dravidian stalwarts Annadurai and Periyar. "The AIADMK's silence at the event was conspicuous and conspicuous by its absence," he said in a statement.
Addressing a press conference in Chennai, Chidambaram said the AIADMK dignitaries who attended the conference should have walked out of the venue when a video clip criticising the Dravidian stalwarts was played at the event held in Madurai on June 22.
The former union minister said the AIADMK's dismal performance in the rural local bodies poll, recent bye-elections, and local body elections in Tamil Nadu were the results of the party's policies and the "inaction" of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Chidambaram said the AIADMK, which called the video clip "most unfortunate", should have demanded that such clips should not be shown at the event. He accused the AIADMK of "playing the BJP's game" and acting out of "fear".
But the AIADMK was yet to explain why it "silently" attended the conference when a video clip criticising its stalwarts was shown, he added.
"The AIADMK should explain why it fears the BJP, why it plays the BJP's game, and why it is silent about the BJP's anti-Tamil, anti- secular, and anti-Dravidian policies and behaviour," he said.
Chidambaram said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP chief J.P. Nadda had nothing to say when the video clip was played at the conference.
He alleged that the BJP had tried to undermine the Dravidian movement and its leaders through its propaganda and falsehoods, but said the TN people will not allow the party to succeed.
"The BJP will not succeed in its agenda of destroying the Dravidian movement," he said.
The Congress leader demanded that the BJP apologise to the people of TN for showing the video clip aimed at the Dravidian movement's leaders.
He also demanded that the AIADMK clarify its stand on the BJP's "anti-Tamil stance".
