The Pentagon has dubbed the operation that saw the US bunker bomb Fordow nuclear site as "Midnight Hammer", a culmination of a 15 year long plan envision by former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld.
The massive explosion that rocked the Fordow Nuclear Facility in Iran was not a spontaneous decision by the Biden administration, but one that was 15 years in the making. Crafted under the tenure of former defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the clandestine operation went under the moniker of "Midnight Hammer", aimed at destroying Iran's nuclear capabilities should negotiations fail.
Speaking to CNN, retired Brigadier General Richard C. Cavazos confirmed the operation was planned since the Bush administration, explaining:" As such, we have had a number of contingency plans that have been updated and modified over the years to respond to a variety of scenarios. And, obviously, this particular site, Fordow, has been of interest."
Although the origin of the plan stems from the Bush administration, it has been modified and updated under each successive administration, with approvals and disapprovals for different elements of the plan along the way. The operation was ultimately greenlit by President Joe Biden ahead of the assassination of Qasem Soleimani, with Biden wanting to send a message to Iran that if negotiations failed, the US had other ways to exert pressure.
The message seems to have been heard loud and clear in Tehran, with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stating:" The bombardment of Fordow showed that America is too weak to wage a war against Iran and that aggression causes them damage."
It's clear that the message was also heard across the broader Middle East, with Yemeni rebels claiming the attack on the facility was a diversion for their own attack on Saudi Arabia. Whether this is true or not, one thing is certain: the 15 year plan has put the US in a position to exert maximum pressure on Iran via military means, whether they want to engage in talks or not.
