nz cricomplete kiwi comeback a possibility as bevon jacobs eyes icc t20 world cup, indian premier league gigs following new zealand t20i tri-series selection.
Bevon Jacobs, a former Kiwi batsman, has been picked for New Zealand's T20I tri-series in Zimbabwe and aims to use this opportunity as a springboard to more prominent gigs, including the 2026 T20 World Cup and a potential IPL comeback.
Jacobs, who played four T20Is for New Zealand in 2014, has been in sensational form, topping the batting charts in the Super Smash T20 competition. His selection for the tri-series was well-deserved, and Jacobs is confident of making a difference for the Black Caps.
"It's always been a dream of mine to represent New Zealand at the highest level. I missed out on the ODI and Test teams, but I'm determined to make the most of this opportunity in the T20I format," said Jacobs.
He believes his performances in the 2022 Super Smash, where he amassed 407 runs at a stunning average of 67.57, proved he can thrive at the top level.
"I think my performances in the Super Smash showed what I'm capable of. I topped the charts in terms of runs scored, and my strike rate was pretty decent too. I'm confident I can do the same thing at the international level," added Jacobs.
And Jacobs' ambitions don't stop at the international stage. The right-hander has set his sights on the lucrative IPL. "I've been in touch with a few IPL franchises, and they've expressed interest in me. I think if I can perform well for New Zealand in the tri-series, hopefully, that could lead to an IPL contract," revealed Jacobs.
With the 2026 T20 World Cup less than three years away, Jacobs acknowledges it might be a stretch to cement a spot in the Kiwi squad. "The competition for spots in the New Zealand team is incredibly tough. There are plenty of quality players around, and you've got to be on top of your game to make it," he said.
"But that's my ultimate goal to play for New Zealand in the T20 World Cup. I know it'll take a lot of effort and consistent performances, but I'm up for the challenge."
And Jacobs has drawn inspiration from his compatriot Colin de Grandhomme, who remarkably returned to the Black Caps in 2021 after a stellar season in the Plunket Shield, scoring 433 runs at an average of 51.86.
"Colin de Grandhomme's comeback is proof that if you perform, you'll get opportunities. He showed that you can't give up, and if you're good enough, you'll get your chance," Jacobs concluded.
The 2026 T20 World Cup may soon be here, but for Jacobs, his journey back to the Kiwi squad and possibly an IPL stage is already underway.
