China and Pakistan have recently held a joint exercise in Balochistan, a province in Pakistan that borders Afghanistan and Iran and has been the center of a long-running insurgency against the Pakistani government. This has drawn heavy scrutiny from India, which has long been embroiled in a territorial conflict with Pakistan and China.
The exercise, dubbed "Pak-China Joint Military Exercise 2021" was aimed at exchanging knowledge and experience in fighting terrorism and was attended by both countries' military personnel and observers. This stands as a significant move signaling China's continued support for Pakistan, particularly in the context of India's ongoing isolation in the region.
India finds itself diplomatically isolated, with Russia, China, and Iran among those ignoring our position on the Pahalgam terror attack and leaving it out of the joint statement. India's Foreign Secretary, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, was quoted saying "it is indeed a matter of concern that our regional neighbors should not be indulging in such exercises," regarding the joint exercise.
The exercise is just the latest move in China and Pakistan's deepening relationship. For India, it is an alarming development and has yet again underscored India's isolated position in the regional geo-political spectrum.
