Eknath Shinde Plans Grand Statue Of His Political Mentor Anand Dighe In Thane: Who Was He?

Anand Dighe, a revered Shiv Sena leader in the Thane region, passed away in August 2001 after suffering a heart attack following an accident. On Thursday, 22 July, Shinde, along with Mumbai Mayor Bhaskar Jadhav, laid the foundation for a grand statue of the later leader in Thane. The statue is proposed to be erected at Lake Gardens, the same location where the foundation stone for the statue of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray was laid.

Born in 1945, Anand Dighe served as a three-time MLA and once independent MP from Mumbai. He was also a member of the Shiv Sena Party's national executive committee and was instrumental in shaping Thane and Konkan regions' growth. After his death, the Anand Dighe Memorial Trust was founded, which has erected several monuments and started several institutions in his memory.

Shinde, currently serving as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, has been a longtime follower and close associate of Anand Dighe. In the early 1980s, Shinde joined the Shiv Sena and was mentored by Dighe when the latter was the party's state unit chief. Shinde's association with Dighe continued till the latter's death in 2001.

This grand statue of the revered leader will be a fitting tribute to his contributions to Maharashtra politics and society. Work is underway, with the statue expected to be unveiled by the end of the year.

Stay tuned for more updates on major political developments in the state.
