Iran Lashes Out At Trump Over 'Embarrassing' Comments On Khamenei

Iran has criticized remarks made by former U.S. President Donald Trump about Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling them "shameful" and an attempt to distract attention from the " humiliation " the Iranian people have suffered under Trump's "maximum pressure campaign."

During a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum on Tuesday, Trump criticized the Obama administration for reaching the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, claimed that Iran was behind the attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq, and alleged that Khamenei was desperate to save Iran from "destruction" through diplomacy.

"Iran is a blown-up country that will collapse anyway. Iran is a country with no future."

Trump further claimed that the U.S. had saved Khamenei from an "ugly and ignominious death" and accused the Supreme Leader of ingratitude.

In response, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzadeh said Trump's comments were "embarrassing" and that the ex-president's "strange and shameful" remarks were an attempt to distract the world from the U.S. sanctions and military threats against Iran.

"The Iranian people will never forget that it was you who shouted that Iran must be destroyed, that the Islamic Republic must be obliterated, and that Iran's culture and history must be eradicated," Said Khatibzadeh said, according to IRNA.

The remarks were also criticized by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who said Trump's comments were "shameful, irresponsible, and spun a web of lies."

"The Iranian nation will never forget your crimes against the Iranian people, including the seizure of $1.4 billion of its funds abroad, and your humiliation and destruction of the Iranian people," Raisi added.

This is not the first time the Iranian government has criticized comments made by Trump. Shortly after Trump's election in 2016, the then-president-elect took to Twitter to criticize the Iranian government, saying they had been "found out" for their support of terrorist activities.

In response, the Iranian president at the time, Hassan Rouhani, accused Trump of using language typical of "bullying and gangsterism."

This latest exchange shows that tensions between Iran and the U.S. are still high, with both sides continuing to criticize each other despite ongoing talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.
