As oil marketing companies announced fresh prices for petrol and diesel today, here's how rates stood in your city.
The price of petrol in Delhi saw a hike of INR 0.35 per litre, while diesel prices went up by INR 0.36 per litre in the national capital. In Mumbai, petrol cost was up by INR 0.29 per litre, and diesel by INR 0.30 per litre. In Chennai, petrol saw an increase of INR 0.37 per litre and diesel INR 0.38 per litre.
This came as a shock for most consumers, as fuel prices had remained unchanged for the past few days. Incidentally, this sharp rise in prices came on the eve of the union budget announcement. Many consumers are hoping for some relief in terms of taxes and duties in the budget.
Last month, the Centre announced a USD 5.5 billion package for the public sector oil companies to ease their finances amid the political stalemate over the farm laws. This included raising the ethanol blending mandate to 10% by 2030, and INR 1.5 trillion via the PM Gati Shakti initiative.
The story awaits the Union budget announcement to see whether the government has any further relief plans for consumers, and for the PSUs dealing with the petroleum sector.
