Hubert Hurkacz's comeback on the grass courts of Wimbledon has been stalled by the very surface that was supposed to be the Pole's redemption. The 2021 champion suffered a setback in his recover from knee surgery, forcing him to withdraw from the tournament he so convincingly won last year.
Hurkacz, 28, underwent surgery after tearing the meniscus in his right knee in a second-round match at Wimbledon last year. The operation kept him out for the rest of the season, but he had hoped to return in time for this year's Wimbledon. However, those hopes were dashed when he suffered a new injury in his right leg during his recovery process.
"I am heartbroken to announce that my return to Wimbledon this year is not going to happen," he wrote on social media on Sunday. "I had a setback recently during my rehab process and unfortunately, I have to withdraw from the tournament."
It is another cruel turn for a player who has suffered a litany of injuries in the last few years. In addition to his knee problems, Hurkacz also required a procedure on his ankle back in 2020. Despite all of these setbacks, the Pole has continued to show promise when he is able to get onto the court, reaching the final of the Miami Open in April.
Yet, for now, Hurkacz will have to sit and watch as his fellow players do battle at Wimbledon. He will be hopeful that this is merely a minor blip in his career and that he can return to the top of the game soon.
"It was always my biggest dream to play at Wimbledon and my biggest goal to win it," he wrote. "I'm devastated that I won't be able to compete at the top of my game this year."
