Four More Inmates Complete Journey to Space Through Private Company Axiom

Four astronauts returned to Earth on Axiom's venture back to the globe's blue-and-white surface, marking the company's fourth successful mission into space.

The quartet of astronauts aboard the Axiom Space-1 (Ax-1) mission landed in the Atlantic Ocean near the Bahamas days ago, marking the conclusion of their ambitious journey to the International Space Station (ISS) and a milestone for the private company, Axiom.

The company's mission, in cooperation with NASA and the ISS, was the first private mission to the ISS and the first to include a former NASA astronaut as a mission commander. The crew traveled to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragonfly spacecraft and spent approximately 10 days aboard the station conducting scientific research and tech demonstrations.

According to Axiom, the Ax-1 mission's objectives were twofold: to deliver research to advance pharmaceuticals, and other novel therapies, and to demonstrate the viability of its model for future missions to and from the ISS.

Given the successful landing of Ax-1, and the mission's achievement of its objectives, the company is already planning Ax-2, which is slated to launch later this year.

NASA representative Megan McArthur praised the collaboration between private and government entities, highlighting the benefits for both parties and echoing Axiom's aspirations for future missions.

"Thank you to SpaceX, Axiom Space, and the crews of Expeditions 70/71/72/73 for the tremendous cooperation that made this private mission to the ISS a success," said McArthur. "We look forward to more opportunities to collaborate with commercially provided services for low-Earth orbit research and technology demonstrations."
