Steve Smith's Comeback Against West Indies Almost Certain

Steve Smith's recovery from a finger injury is going well and he aims to return for the second Test against West Indies in Grenada, according to Australia's T20 captain Andrew McDonald.

The former Test captain, who has missed the majority of the last two years due to the ball-tampering scandal, suffered a severe blow to his right index finger in the first Test against England in March, which required surgery and cost him a spot in the IPL.

McDonald said that Smith's injury recovery is slightly ahead of schedule and that the in-form batsman is likely to play the intra-squad practice match before the second Test against the West Indies.

"Smithy's pulled up really well," McDonald said. "He's rehabbing himself nowadays, he's almost got an assistant physiotherapist at this stage. His finger looks great, it's healed beautifully and he's been able to get some bat back in his hand. He's come out of the last few days' training really well.

"There's a practice game on the weekend, we'll see how he goes in that and make a decision from there but I'd say he's well and truly on track and hopefully he'll get through that and be available for the second Test."

The news will be a big boost for Australia, who are already without their vice-captain David Warner and batsman Will Pucovski, who both suffered concussions, and opener Cameron Bancroft, who is struggling with his form.

The second Test against the West Indies begins on July 12 in Grenada.
