Steve Smith Hits Back At Aussie Legend Over Batting Coach Criticism: 'Not One...'

Australian cricketing star Steve Smith has hit back at criticism from cricket legend Ian Healy, defending Michael Di Venuto and hitting back at the Aussie icon's claims that the batting coach lacked 'presence'.

Smith, who recently led his team, the Sydney Spartans, to victory in the inaugural Champions League T20 tournament in Hawaii, was outspoken in his defence of Di Venuto, who he worked with extensively during his time as Australian men's team captain.

Smith's defence comes after Healy suggested that Di Venuto, who was appointed as Australia's first full-time batting coach in 2019, lacked the 'presence' required to push the team's batsmen to improve their performances.

In a candid interview, Smith lashed back at Healy, saying the criticism was unfair and that Di Venuto's impact was felt deeply within the team.

"I don't think there's anyone who could say that hasn't improved sinceDV has been involved," said Smith. "Not one person will come out and say that they haven't improved or haven't learned things or haven't gotten better as a batter."

Smith went on to explain that the crafting of an international cricketer requires a great deal of 'behind-the-scenes' work, and praised Di Venuto's efforts in this domain.

"It's just a little bit unfair," Smith said. "Sometimes batting coaches don't get the credit for the work they do behind the scenes. I think DV has certainly done that."

Smith's passionate defence will ensure the conversation around Di Venuto's coaching capabilities continues.

The batting coach's contract ends after the upcoming Ashes series against England. It remains to be seen whether his tenure will be extended.
