Artificial Intelligence App DeepSeek AI Booted From App Stores Over Data Privacy Concerns

Apple and Google have removed the artificial intelligence (AI) app DeepSeek AI from their respective app stores, following concerns over the app's data sharing practices. The app, developed by local company DeepCor, allegedly violated several guidelines set by both companies. The app allowed users to scan social media profiles of prospective dates or employees, in order to ascertain personal details such as emotional stability, sexual orientation, and other habits.

The app scanned thousands of profiles on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn to offer a personality profile, alongside a percentage that indicates how honest they believe the profile reflects the person.

Privacy watchdogs and several users raised concerns that the app was infringing on users' privacy and personal data, despite the company claiming that the images were not stored on their servers. DeepCor maintained that the images are deleted from their servers, and that the app provides a convenient and innovative solution to verify online identities. The company plans to reapply for approval with improved transparency and strengthened data protection, in hopes of reinstating the app.

The incident has raised questions about the potential risks of AI technology and its implications on individuals' data privacy.
