Azhar Mahmood named interim red-ball coach for Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former bowler Azhar Mahmood as interim red-ball coach until the team regains Test playing status.

Azhar Mahmood will replace Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis, who resigned in December 2021, shortly after Pakistan's departure from the 2021 ICC World Cup. The PCB confirmed that Mahmood, who previously served as the Pakistan men's national team's bowling coach and interim head coach for the limited overs series against Australia in July 2022, will assume his new role immediately and will be in charge of preparations for the upcoming series against New Zealand.

"The PCB is confident that under Azhar's guidance, the red-ball squad will continue to grow in strength, discipline and performance on the global stage," the board said in a statement.,

Azhar Mahmood's career spanned almost two decades, representing Pakistan in all three formats. He took 261 wickets in 46 Tests, 161 wickets in 132 ODIs, and 19 wickets in 18 T20Is. He will be looking to help Pakistan's red-ball squad reach the 2023 World Cup in India.
