India has stepped up efforts to help alleviate the plight of Afghan citizens with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing plans to enhance cooperation in multiple sectors. One of the first initiatives underway is the organization of a 'Jaipur Foot' camp in Kabul, where Afghan amputees are provided with prosthetic limbs free of cost. This marks India's first structured community project since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan with the Taliban welcoming the move.
It is estimated that tens of thousands of Afghans have had to amputate their limbs due to explosives planted across the country. The 'Jaipur Foot' is a silicone-based prosthetic limb developed by Indian orthopedic surgeon Dr. P.K. Sethi, which costs around $40 to make, a fraction of the cost of similar available alternatives.
India has a history of providing humanitarian aid to Afghanistan dating back to the 1990s when it organized medical camps and provided essential supplies to the country during its civil war,
Ultimately, with Taliban in control, India is looking to strengthen its presence in Afghanistan and reboot its connectivity plans, including the strategic Chabahar port project which could potentially bypass the circuitous route via Iran and Pakistan for trade with Afghanistan.
This small yet significant step in providing prosthetics could be the start of something much bigger, both strategically and in terms of goodwill, in the region.
