A recent Gartner survey has revealed that companies with more AI maturity significantly outperform their peers over the long term, reinforcing the importance of thoughtful AI adoption. The survey assessed AI maturity using Gartner's AI Maturity Model, which scores organizations on a 5-level scale based on their ability to select AI projects based on business value and technical feasibility and their adoption of associated governance and engineering practices.
The research, conducted in Q4 2024, surveyed 432 respondents from the US, UK, France, Germany, India, and Japan. Findings revealed that high-maturity organizations, those with an average score of 4.2-4.5, demonstrated a key ingredient to long-term success: the selection of AI projects based on robust justification and the utilization of appropriate implementation practices.
"Enterprises need to rethink their AI deployment strategies," said Mike Rollings, senior research vice president at Gartner. "The key to achieving long-term success with AI projects lies in selecting the right projects and ensuring they are implemented in a sustainable and responsible manner."
The survey concluded that the organizations that score highest on the AI maturity scale have notably accelerated their delivery of AI projects over the past 12 months, thus confirming that a focus on business value, technical feasibility, and rigorous governance and engineering practices is vital for achieving desired outcomes.
"Organizations that want to maximize the business value and mitigate the risks associated with their AI investments should focus on evolving their AI strategies from experimental to operational," advised Rollings.
It is clear that a thoughtful and strategic approach to AI adoption is no longer an option but a crucial prerequisite for any enterprise aiming for long-term success. As AI continues to revolutionize the way we conduct business, organizations that fall behind in maturity may struggle to keep up with the competition and risk being left behind.
The study's findings highlight the importance of rethinking AI deployment strategies and prioritizing projects with clear business value and technical feasibility, coupled with robust governance and engineering practices.
By doing so, enterprises can trust that their investment in AI will fuel long-term success and position them at the forefront of innovation.
