India is expected to raise the recent Pahalgam attack that claimed the lives of at least 11 people at the BRICS summit in Brazil. The move is to seek condemnation of the Pakistan-sponsored terror attack.
The BRICS summit will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will be held from 13 to 15 July in Brazil. The latest terror attack in Indian-administered Kashmir is expected to be on top of the agenda during the three-day meet.
India's ambassador to Brazil, Andre Aranha Correa do Lago, tweeted on Saturday, expressing his country's condemnation of the attack. "We repudiate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and we express our solidarity with the victims and their families."
The attack in Pahalgam, a tourist town south of Srinagar, has left the security forces in the region on high alert, with the counterterrorism unit of the police calling it a "major attack."
This comes after a similar attack in Srinagar on May 30, just before Prime Minister Modi was to visit the region. The bomb disposal unit and counterterrorism forces managed to thwart the attack, but it left one police officer dead and several others injured.
It is expected that India will seek a strong condemnation of the attack from the BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), and Pakistan, which has been perennially accused of sponsoring terrorism against India, especially from outfits operating out of its territory in Kashmir.
Only time will tell what impact the BRICS summit has on the relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors and the future of India's security and success.
