Sumit Antil, the Indian parathlete who won a gold medal in the 2021 Tokyo Paralympics, hopes to see local doctors and hospitals attend the forthcoming World Para-Athletics Championships.
Antil, who lost his leg in 2015 in a bus accident, believes that the event's presence in his home country will motivate local athletes whilst also educating clinicians on the benefits of para-athletics. Local doctors have already carried out around 40 amputations on Indians who want to become high-performance para-athletes.
"I want doctors and hospitals to come and see how they have changed our lives," Antil said. "They have given us a new life. They have given us hope and the opportunity to do something on our own. I want to invite them so that they can see for themselves how they have changed our lives."
The event, hosted in Kochi, India, between January 9-16, will feature around 1,900 para-athletes from 100 countries competing in 86 events.
"I want to urge everyone to come and watch the championships," Antil added. "Just see how these disabled people do such great things, and you will go back home with no complaints about your life."
