Donald Trump administration escalates legal battles with Los Angeles

The former president has taken aim at Los Angeles, involving the city in multiple lawsuits amid his ongoing legal battles.

Former President Donald Trump has targeted Los Angeles in a series of lawsuits, escalating his legal battles with the city as he continues to fight the results of the 2020 presidential election and grapple with the authority of elected prosecutors.

Trump's latest move has been against the Los Angeles County district attorney, George Gascon, who has been a target of the former president's political allies for his progressive reforms of the county's criminal justice system. The suit, filed on Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges that Gascon's office has engaged in misconduct by failing to investigate crimes such as fraud and obstruction of justice connected to the 2020 election.

Trump's legal challenges to the election results have been largely unsuccessful, with judges consistently ruling that his claims of widespread voter fraud were unfounded. This latest lawsuit, in some ways, extends his efforts to sow doubt about the election results and undermine the authority of those who have pushed back on his claims.

In a separate but related development, Trump has also targeted Los Angeles in his ongoing legal battles related to the January 6, 2021, insurrection. Recently, the House January 6 Committee requested the testimony of several of Trump's allies who were involved in organizing his failed legal challenges to the election results. One of them, John Eastman, who was also the attorney general of California until January 2021, refused to comply with the request, citing executive privilege even though he was not a current official.

Trump has also sued the committee and the National Archives, seeking to intervene in the deposition of Eastman and another attorney, Bruce Castor. He argued in his latest lawsuit that the committee's request for these men's testimony is "an outrageous abuse of power" that violates his constitutional rights.

These lawsuits continue to keep Trump and his legal battles in the public eye, posing political challenges for Los Angeles officials and potentially influencing the political landscape ahead.
