'Been Preparing For This Moment': Alexia Putellas Back In Spain Squad For Euro 2025

Barcelona's Alexia Putellas has been named in Spain's squad for the Euro 2025 championship after recovering from a serious knee injury. The forward, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2022, missed the whole of the 2023-24 season following surgery on her left knee last year. But Spain's all-time leading female scorer has steadily been regaining fitness, and national team coach Jorge Vilda has included the 27-year-old in his 20-strong squad for this month's friendly matches against the United States and Portugal.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said Putellas would not be available for Barcelona's Champions League final against Lyon on May 22, the same day as the Spain squad's gathering in Madrid. But the former accolade holder for the women's Ballon d'Or will link up with her national team colleagues the following day.

"I know that she's ready for this moment, she's hungry for this moment, and I think all of Spanish football is happy to have her back with us," Vilda told reporters. "We have to protect her but also give her the ball, because when she has the ball, she can score a goal or provide a great pass."

Spain, already reigning champions of the Nations League after beating France in the 2024 final, will be among the favorites to win the Euros, which start on June 11. The tournament will take place across 16 European cities, with London's Wembley Stadium set to host the final on July 14.
