Minister Gadkari Condemns Assault on NHAI Officer by Himachal Minister

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, has condemned the assault on a National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officer by the Himachal Pradesh Minister of Rural Development in Mandi yesterday. In a statement, Gadkari noted that he has taken serious cognizance of the matter, and discussed the issue with Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of officials and officials performing their duties fairly and honestly.

The incident, he said, was "deeply reprehensible." Sukhu has ordered a investigation into the incident. The Chief Minister's Office tweeted that "strict action" would be taken once the investigation was completed.

The officer, Kuldeep Singh Randhawa, told The Tribune that Kumar had asked him to stop the coal-laden trucks because they were violating the prescribed weight limit. When he stood up to them, the minister and his companions allegedly beat him up. Randhawa is the supervisor at the NHAI's weighbridge checking station in Lanjot, near Mandi.
