The women's safety wing of the Telangana state police has boosted women's safety with a pioneering integration of ride-sharing apps Uber SOS and Safe Gaadi into its T-Safe service. Telangana Police claims that this is the first instance in India of a police force integrating public and private transport platforms for real-time monitoring of rides. With the new feature, a rider can tap the SOS button on the Uber app, and the Telangana Police will receive their location and ride details to trigger an emergency response. This intervention shifts from reactive to proactive safety measures for women commuters. The integrated T-Safe service allows customers to access Uber SOS and Safe Gaadi through T-Safe QR codes. The app also enables live monitoring of rides and resolves ride deviations through the police dispatch system. Since its inception, T-Safe has monitored 36,000 rides, addressed 27,000 SOS alerts, and resolved over 39,000 ride deviations with a average response time of 13 minutes. The Telangana Police is expanding T-Safe integrations with additional travel aggregators such as Ola, Rapido, Manayatri, and Abhibus to enhance their services.
"This is a leap forward in our mission to make every ride safe. With Uber SOS and Safegaadi integrations, T-Safe ensures real-time alerts and swift police response, a shift from reactive safety to proactive intervention," said Director General (WSF) Shikha Goel.
Overall, the Telangana Police initiative demonstrates a novel approach to promoting safe commuting environments for women using digitally mediated technologies.
