Delhi Police has recently been making headlines for their efforts to combat cybercrime. However, it is now unfortunately in the spotlight for another reason after a cybercrime incident involving a 77-year-old Hyderabad man who was duped of Rs 53 lakh by fraudsters. The culprits posed as Delhi DCP Rajiv Kumar and used forged documents to deceive the victim. This harrowing case underscores the need for ongoing efforts to combat online scams and to protect our vulnerable elderly citizens.
In this disturbing incident, the victim received a phone call on June 18, where the fraudsters introduced themselves as Delhi DCP Rajiv Kumar. They initiated a video call, displaying a Delhi Police uniform to further deceive the elderly man. They falsely accused him of money laundering, presented forged documents, and even threatened him with an arrest warrant and frozen bank accounts.
Understandably, the victim became extremely fearful and pleaded with the "police officers" not to register the case. Believing that the money would be returned after verification, the victim transferred Rs 53 lakh in multiple transactions. However, after the video call ended abruptly, and with attempts to reach the callers futile, the victim realized he had been duped and filed a complaint with the Telangana police.
This unfortunate case, unfortunately, reflects a severe issue of online scams that target senior citizens. The police department receives numerous complaints annually. Cybercrime, with its numerous advanced forms such as phishing, spoofing, and hacking, is a pervasive challenge that hides many dangers. As technology advances, we need to be vigilant in protecting ourselves and our elders from such perpetrators.
The investigation continues to trace the fraudsters, and this case serves as a cautionary tale for all internet users. Let this be a reminder to take every security measure possible and to be vigilant against such sophisticated and deceitful tactics.
