Improving security measures and ensuring the safety of residents, especially women, becomes a priority for Cyberabad with thousands of hostels catering to the city's thriving IT industry.

The Cyberabad Police Commissioner, Avinash Mohanty, recently conducted a coordinated meeting with 225 hostel owners from the Madhapur and Balanagar zones. The meeting aimed to address the implementation of improved security measures and fire safety protocols in hostels.

Hyderabad, known for its impressive growth as an IT hub and emerging global centre for capability centres, healthcare services, and photonics, attracts students and working professionals from all over India. The city's numerous hostels offer accommodations for all budgets and cater mainly to non-residents.

Police officials emphasized the importance of maintaining updated records and verifying the background of each resident for hostel owners. Essential details, such as identification, workplace information, and emergency contact information of a family member, should be collected, officials said.

They advised owners to monitor residents' daily routines and safe commuting to their workplaces. The Safe Stay Project, with ten key guidelines launched by the Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC), aims to enhance security and comfort in hostels. A centralized platform providing information on hostels' amenities, room availability, and pricing is also developed by SCSC.

Fire safety concerns were also raised, with HYDRA Additional Director (Fire) highlighting that 75% of hostels do not comply with fire safety regulations. Officials must ensure that hostels obtain mandatory fire safety No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) and implement safety protocols on smoking material handling, electrical and kitchen safety, and fire detection systems.

The Telangana Fire Services Department offers one-day fire safety training for hostel staff, ensuring safety standards in the state. The meeting urged hostel owners to prioritize the safety and security of their residents, collaborating with SCSC, the police, and taking proactive steps to prevent emergencies.

As Hyderabad continues to flourish and attract residents for its outstanding economic opportunities, proactive measures ensure that the city's vibrant growth is coupled with enhanced security and safety for all.
